The Melbourne and Hobsons Bay Co, was formed in 1852 and was Melbournes first railway company. Parliament passed an Act in 1853 allowing the company to construct a railway line between Melbourne and Sandridge (Port Melbourne). By 1854 the line was in operation. The early railway engaged steam locomotives and one is seen approaching the railway traverse-table.
